Extended Definition-Paper

Extended definition- Paper

Paper is a thin material used for writing upon, printing upon or packaging. It is very difficult to find such a versatile, reliable material in our life as paper. It is true that paper has invaded almost all parts of our life in its myriad forms.

History of Paper

Paper is believed to have originated in Ancient China. The word paper derives from the Greek term for the ancient Egyptian writing material called papyrus, which was formed from beaten strips of papyrus plants. China used paper as an effective and cheap alternative to silk, letting them sell more silk, leading to a Golden Age. The use of paper spread from China through the Islamic world, where the first paper mills were built, and entered production in Europe in the early 12th century. Mechanized production of paper in the early 19th century caused a significant cultural change for exchange of information became faster leading to enhanced cultural ties between countries.

Preparation of paper involves breaking down of the chemical structure of lignin. This is to ensure that it becomes soluble in liquor to free it from the cellulose fibres. Thus the binding of fibres is due to the lignin present. Pulping frees the fibres to make pulp. There are two types of pulping- mechanical, chemical. However, chemical pulping is more preferable than mechanical method as it tends to increase the strength of the fibre produced. Moreover, the majority of heat and electricity required is produce by burning the raw material lignin.

The first step involved in the production of paper is removal of pulp from the cellulose fibres using the methods described. Water is removed from the pulp by pressing and drying. At this point paper is uncoated. The next step is to coat the paper with a layer of material such as Calcium, carbonate or clay. The paper thus finished is fed onto reels ,especially if it is to be used for web-printing.

Paper has been a part and parcel of our lives. It is one of the most versatile products today. From boxes to packaging material to books to decorations, uses of paper are limitless.

However, in rapidly growing world of today, where everything is getting digitized, paper may end up being extinct. The old world charm of the paperback will be rare and paper may become a seldom-seen material, peeking out only when an origami artists twists the magic material to create wonderful objects!!!
