Scholarship Day Function at SSN
Scholarship day Function @ SSN
The onset of the month of November had the SSNites buzzing. As the D-day- 4 November 2009-arrived, the activities had reached a feverish pitch. The reason-the students' hard work during the previous year was being rewarded at the Annual Scholarship Day function. In addition, the college was gearing up to meet the esteemed Chief Guests for the day- the Union Minister for Human Resources and Development, Mr.Kapil Sibal and minister of Higher education for TamilNadu, Dr.Ponmudi.
The Management, staff of SSN College has always been encouraging and the scholarships awarded every year to the deserving students have been a motivating factor in the lives of many students. Hence, it comes as no surprise that SSN Scholarship Day Function is one of most-awaited events in the SSN Calendar. The scholarship Day Function began at 2.30 p.m.with a short prayer, followed by the distribution of scholarships to about 475 students from the First year BE students to MBA students of the college. Scholarships worth Rs.20 crore , on the whole were given away by Padma Bhushan Dr. Shiv Nadar, Founder, Mr. V.S.Arunachalam, former Scientific Advisor to the Minister of Defence,Government of India. The scholarships were awarded in four different categories- Merit Scholarships, Merit-cum-Means Scholarships, Walk-in-Walk-Out scholarships, Sports Scholarships. This was followed by a short tea break at 4 p.m.
The second part of the function witnessed the presence of the guests of Honour, Mr.Kapil Sibal, and Dr.Ponmudi. A brief audio-visual presentation about the life at SSN Campus highlighted the various aspects of the college including the e-learning initiative. Next, Ms.Kala Vijayakumar, President, SSN Institutions, introduced the Chief Guests for the day. Mr.Kapil Sibal and Mr. Ponmudi then gave away the four scholarships to one student representative of each category. Next, Dr.Ponmudi delivered the introductory keynote address, recounting his views on the state of education in India today, with some humorous anecdotes interspersed with the address. Mr.Kapil Sibal's concluding keynote address, on the other hand, began on a more serious note. Mr. Sibal emphasized the need to improve the standard of basic and higher education in India, in addition to developing the field of vocational education. He stressed the importance of research and building up of a knowledge base to bring the Indian education system on par with the international ones. A vote of thanks delivered by Dr.Shiv Nadar, brought this session to its close. But the show was far from over.
Here at SSN things are done differently. An elegant, simple Scholarship distribution ceremony, devoid of over-the-top-grandeur, certainly set SSN apart from the ordinary college. Yet, the cultural show that followed was anything but simple. It was a grand effort by the students of SSN.A violin concert by Bala, dance performance by Vaishnavi were part of the show. However, the highlight of the cultural show was a music performance by the famous playback singer Karthik. He gave voice to many popular film songs, keeping the audience enthralled. His melodic strains and enthusiasm provided an edge-of-the-seat, thrilling experience to the listeners, who thoroughly enjoyed the show. Thus, the event-filled evening came to a musical conclusion and it would be fair to say that the Scholarship Day function was a very memorable one, not only for the scholarship awardees and their families but to the SSNites overall.
Paragraph Writing-Preserving Environment
WAYS TO PRESERVE ENVIRONMENT
In today’s scenario, the future of humankind on the earth is dependant on the environment and its preservation is thus the need of the hour. Indiscriminate use of our valuable natural resources coupled with waste mismanagement has made us realize the importance of salvaging our environment. If we begin to work towards this goal by small measures now, we could reach a long way in safeguarding our environment. The first and foremost way to prevent damage to our surroundings is to control pollution. Segregation of waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable rubbish at homes, minimizing the use of plastics or recycling plastic goods is a small step in this direction. In addition, we must utilize cleaner yet renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind or geothermal energy rather than depend on fossil fuels that lead to pollution. We must also prevent the use of sprays containing chlorofluorocarbons, which have been a major cause of ozone layer depletion. Another important way to conserve environment is afforestation. Trees are natural recyclers and use the carbon-di-oxide in air, thus maintaining its level in air. Flora and fauna constitute a part of environment. Hence, conservation of animals too, has a role in maintaining the ecological balance. This cone be done by making poaching a severe offence and hence punishable by law, and creating wildlife reserves to preserve endangered species and their habitat. Humans have a symbiotic (give-and-take) relationship with environment and if only, we follow the way of the Rs- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle; we could certainly rejuvenate and revive our environment to its former glory.

Sir
Sub: Complaining about inadequate and poor quality of water supply
This is to bring to your kind notice, the troubles faced by the Sunshine Town concerning the supply of water. The municipal corporation water supply is erratic and the quality of the water supplied is poor, thus compounding our troubles.
Two years of severe drought had resulted in the drying up of the lakes and ponds in the Sunshine Town. This left us at the mercy of the Corporation Authorities for water supply for drinking and washing purposes. In these times of severe water crisis, the supply of water has been irregular. The supplied water fills our sumps only twice a week and only half of the sump is filled even then. Besides, the quality of the supplied water is poor. Reddish brown in colour, with floating rubbles, the water is hardly fit for drinking even after boiling. Nor is the sump water fit for washing clothes, vessels for it leaves white scum on washing. The safety of drinking the supplied water may be questionable. After drinking this water, a little girl in our neighbourhood had suffered from diahorrea and vomiting!
It is high time that the corporation authorities take action to improve the water supply to the Sunshine Town. This could be done by building storage tanks at various points in the locality. These tanks could be filled at least thrice a week with the help of water tankers. In addition, the supply of water to the sumps should be more regular. It would benefit us a lot if the sumps could be filled on alternate days. In addition, steps should be taken to enhance the quality of the water, with the help of better filtration, purification techniques. With such measures in place, the corporation could indeed prevent a health crisis in our locality.
I request you to publish this letter so that the concerned authorities may look into this issue as soon as possible.
Thank you
Yours sincerely

Thank you for inviting me to be the Chief Guest for the Centenary Celebrations of the English Literary Club to be held on 10 October 2009. I am honoured to receive such an invitation and would love to be a part of the Celebration.
I am impressed by the efforts put in by your students to conduct workshops, guest lectures in your university. It gives me great pleasure to know about the various activities that have taken place in the ELC of your university. The array of events, including various oratorical and creative-writing competitions, that have been lined up as a part of the Centenary Celebrations seems impressive. In fact, the topic chosen for this year “Nature and Literature” is an interesting one- one that would definitely be a challenge for the students.
Thank you for the kind offer to bear the travel and other expenses incurred, during this trip to St. Anne’s University, in addition to taking care of my stay at the University. I hereby, confirm my participation as the Chief Guest in the Centenary Celebrations. I assure you that I would be present at the campus by 5:00 p.m. on 9 October 2009.
I once again thank you for honouring me by inviting me as the Chief Guest. I pray for the great success of the event and look forward to attend the same.
Thank You

I am honoured to receive such an invitation and would love to be a part of the celebration but for prior commitments.
I am astounded by the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the students in organizing workshops, guest lectures as a part of the ELC activities and would like to appreciate their efforts in person at the event. However, the world tour, promoting my new book ‘The Lost Soul’ that begins on 5 October at London, has unfortunately deprived me this opportunity to interact with the budding writers of today.
Although I deeply regret my inability to attend the Centenary Celebrations, I would definitely like to be a part of some other ELC activity of your university.
Thank you, once again for honouring me with such an invite. I wish the event a grand success.

Dear Ms. Shindo
I am a Fourth year Computer Graphics and animation student at the Kyoto University. I have always been keen on animation. The presentation presented by representatives of NHK Animation Studios has inspired me to apply for the Winter Animation internship at your company. Dedication and sincerity are a vital part of any successful enterprise, and I hope that I would be able to add such qualities to your enterprise.
I am a hard working, sincere person capable of working alone or working in a group. My leadership skill are time-tested, having worked as the Chairman of the Computer Symposium Committee, besides having been the Event Manager for a wide variety of events -from Computer Programming event to Web Design contests. I hope that my skills would add value to your projects and help me learn more about the Animation Industry.
From my first year at the college, I have been an active part of all the animation symposia held at the Kyoto university. In addition, I have also presented many papers at various Technical Fests both in Japan and abroad. My paper on '3D Modeling in Animation' , won the first place at the Tokyo National University Techno Fest 2007. I have the requisite experience in other aspects of animation, thus making me fully qualified for this internship. I worked as Sound Effects Manager in the movie “Seventh Heaven”, which won the best Animation Film in the Amateur Animation Contest held in Cincinnati.

Flowchart-extraction of sulphur

EXTRACTION OF SULPHUR
BY
FRASCH PROCESS
The following is the description of the process of extraction of sulphur by Frasch process.
First, an area containing sulphur beds is identified. Next, with the help of drilling tools, three concentric pipes are inserted into the sulphur bed. Then, water is heated to form superheated steam at 170 degree Celcius. Superheated water is then allowed to enter the outermost pipe. Sulphur in the beds is thus melted. Then, compressed air at 20- 30 atmospheres is forced into the innermost pipe. Due to this compressed air, molten sulphur is pushed upwards through the middle pipe. Next, molten sulphur is collected and stored in tanks. This sulphur is dried, cooled to obtain 99.9% pure sulphur.
Bar Chart-Reckless Driving
X- AXIS : AGE GROUP
Y- AXIS: PERCENTAGE OF DRIVERS IN THE CATEGORY
EXPLANATION:
The graph given above depicts the percentage of drives in each category(based on gender & age) who have indulged in road rage in the year 2008 in India. 30% of young women and 37.5% of young men have been involved in cases of rash driving, while just 22% of women and 25% of men in the senior age group have been reported to have done the same. In the middle- age category, 27.5% of women and 30% of men have been caught driving recklessly.
INTERPRETATAION:
The studies conducted to find out the exact percentage of drivers divided into groups with respect to their age, have given some usual and some unusual results. It is hardly surprising that young people in general, have been caught indulging more often in road rage. This, may be the direct result of casual driving and little sense of responsibility that generally characterises their age group. In addition, patient driving is something that these youngsters fail to learn early.
The gap between the percentages of women and men drivers who drive carelessly is the highest in this group- 7.5%. This may indicate that this rash driving is much more a part of the adrenaline drive, which would subside in a few years time.
The studies indicate that, as suspected, the middle-aged men and women drive with much more care than youngsters. The experience they have acquired in driving as well as a mature approach to traffic congestion , might be a cause for the decrease in the percentage of the people in this category who have been involved in rash driving. The difference of men and women with regards to the same is also low- just 2.5% for people of this group.
Surprisingly, the incidents of careless driving have been reported even among the seniors. However the percentage of such cases is comparatively low- 25% in men and 22.5% in women. This, despite the fact that the number of senior citizens who drive on their own is very less.
On the whole, it is quite clear that, as of 2008, women drivers are more responsible than their men counterparts. It is heartening to note that drivers mature and become more careful with age, and a little experience is all the youngsters need for a safe drive on the road.
Piechart-Favourite Subjects
Explanation:
The pie chart given above depicts the percentage of students voting for different subjects as their favourite one. The survey was conducted among a class of 60 First Year (B.E.) Computer Science and Engineering students. 35% of the class chose English as their favourite while one-fourth(25%) rooted for Engineering Graphics. 17% opted for Maths, 11% for Computer Fundamentals, 7% for Physics and 5% for Chemistry.
Interpretation:
At the outset, it is no surprise that English has earned the majority of the votes of the students. Unlike most other theory subjects, English does not involve mugging up of pages from the textbook, or memorizing complicated formulae. The flexibility involved in learning English has certainly added to its popularity among the students where subjects are concerned. Engineering Graphics, with the support of 25% of the student community, comes second. In the first year, Engineering Graphics is a relatively new subject and its novelty adds interest in the subject. In addition, Engineering Graphics is the only subject with no writing involved, as it tests only drawing and spatial-analysis skills of the student.
However, it is surprising to note that in a class of computer students, just 11% have marked Computer Fundamentals as the subject most liked by them. This may be because the syllabus covered in the first year involves more of theory-oriented topics such as computer history, generation of computers with little focus on coding or programming initially. Mathematics, also, has fared just a little better than Computer Fundamentals with only 17% favouring it. The absence of much interest in Mathematics is partly because first-year mathematics is much more of an extension of senior secondary mathematics, offering little new to the engineering students. Some students, who are unable to remember numerous formulae that constitute some parts of mathematics, are generally disinterested in the subject.
The students have shown a clear thumbs-down sign to theory-based subjects such as Chemistry and Physics, as only 5% and 7% respectively have chosen these subjects as their favourite.
Overall, it is quite clear that if only focus is shifted to application rather than theory in all the subjects, students would surely develop a greater interest in them!!!
